Bridging Cultures and Creativity: Inside Hydra Edition with Vasiliki Verousi

Nestled in the Aegean Sea, Hydra is the serene backdrop for Hydra Edition, a unique initiative founded by Vasiliki Verousi. This traveling workshop series merges art, sustainability, and community, celebrating local cuisine, fine wines, and zero-waste practices.

With a background in theatre, costume design, and fashion photography, Vasiliki's diverse experiences converge in Hydra Edition, creating a platform for global artists to collaborate and craft in an eco-conscious setting. Join us as we explore the story behind Vasiliki's innovative project on the island of Hydra, and the ways in which she recharges...

How did Hydra Edition begin?

Hydra Edition began during the COVID-19 pandemic when I yearned for a change from the life in London. Visiting Hydra between lockdowns, I was captivated by the island's unique atmosphere, the absence of cars, and the enchanting energy. This inspired me to extend my stay and ultimately split my time between Greece and London, establishing Hydra Edition as a sanctuary for global artists and travellers.

What is it about the island of Hydra that is so appealing to you?

The island of Hydra appeals to me because of its simplicity, artistic spirit, and the freedom it offers. The absence of cars, the natural beauty, and the island's rich history as a haven for artists continuously fuel my creativity. The ability to walk everywhere, greet locals with a warm "kalimera," and absorb the tranquil surroundings makes Hydra a perfect backdrop for both relaxation and creation.

Where is your favourite spot on the island?

My favourite spot on the island is the rooftop off Douskos Port house. It was there that I experienced a serene moment sketching figures inspired by Luke Edward Hall, a memory that often stays with me. That was the place that started everything!

What are your favourite restaurant and cocktail bars on the island?

For breakfast, it has to be Isalos! For dinner I'd recommend Tekne or il casta and for blissful sunset cocktails you have to go to Hydroneta - their Spicy Margarita:1821 is amazing.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in everyday moments and see beauty in the small things in life. Visiting the local fruit market, shopping seasonally, and an approach of repurposing and zero waste are big components of my creations and drive my curation. The island's natural beauty, artistic spirit, and daily interactions with locals also inspire my work.

How do you recharge?

Everything is so much better after dipping in the water. After a quick swim I feel so much refreshed

Is there a scent that holds significance to you?

Yes, I love the smell of jasmine and fresh fig trees. These scents take me straight to the island of Hydra which holds strong memories and emotions.
